DIY Plans for a Modern Outdoor Sectional

Creating an outdoor room is all the rage right now. And with good reason – who doesn’t want to make the most of every inch of their deck and the surrounding beauty of nature? This gorgeous Western Red Cedar outdoor sectional is sure to be the star of your outdoor patio all year long. Smart, functional and easy-to-build with our video and free downloadable plans, this could be our most sought-after DIY cedar project yet.

Easy Weekend DIY Build

And while this DIY patio sectional sofa is a showstopper, it’s pretty easy to put together with pro tips from expert builder Jim West with Westworks Construction.

In the video, West determines the size of the sectional to fit 24-by-24 cushions. His design also includes end pieces that are wide enough to hold a glass of wine (or beer, or cocktail).

West starts his outdoor patio sectional build in his shop before moving it to its designated home on a lucky homeowner’s patio. West opted to fasten the sectional together to avoid having the furniture move apart and float around the deck.

Why Cedar is best for your outdoor furniture

Western Red Cedar is the ideal material to build this beautiful outdoor sectional with. It’s naturally resistant to rot, decay and insects, and nothing looks, smells or feels quite like Western Red Cedar.

“Light-weight, strong, easy to work with – that’s why carpenters love it,” says West.

For this outdoor patio project, West chose a knotty grade of cedar, as it adds warmth and texture. Plus, it’s a cost-effective choice. West left the sectional to weather naturally to a silvery patina, but it could also be stained or painted.

Another bonus in using Western Red Cedar is that it’s a choice you can feel good about, as it leaves a smaller carbon footprint than most building materials.
