When Leslie Jones designed the new indoor Moor Market in Sheffield, UK, the firm’s main objective was to create an exciting market environment without sacrificing many of the traditional features of a market.

Mission accomplished.

This beautiful, shopper-friendly space boasts a remarkably warm and inviting vibe, and here’s why:

“The use of timber internally gives a feeling of quality and warmth, while the dynamic geometry of the roof provides an exciting setting for the theatre of the market to unfold,” explains Magnus Wills, senior architect at Leslie Jones Architecture.

Externally, he added warmth and texture with timber weave panels that have turned out to be so much more than just a standout feature on the building itself.

According to Wills, they’re “contributing to the high quality of architecture to be found in the city and creating a catalyst for regeneration in the area.”

In terms of materials, Wills opted for triangular brass shingles for the arched entrance roof and Western Red Cedar for the weave cladding as well as the horizontal louvers on the south elevation.

“We were attracted to the feeling of warmth and quality provided by the material,” he says of Cedar “as well as its durability and low maintenance, of course!”
